It can be a struggle for new moms to get back in shape especially when they have a baby to take care of.

But now there’s a new way to balance your workout while spending time with your kids right on the shore of Lake Superior.

For working mom Courtney LaPlante, finding time to exercise and be with her 8-month-old daughter Alexia hasn’t been easy.

“You want to be able to get back into shape and feel good about yourself. As a woman, after having a child, it’s hard,” said LaPlante.

But a new trend sweeping the fitness world called Stroller Strides has solved that problem and got her hooked.

“I mean, it’s a tough workout, I’m not going to lie,” laughed LaPlante.

The class started just a few weeks ago in Bayfront Park incorporating strength training and cardio workouts.

“You need a child and stroller is basically all that you need,” said Lisa Filzen, Stroller Strides instructor and owner of FIT4MOM Duluth Lakefront. “You can either power walk or jog with your stroller depending on whatever your fitness level is at.”

In between squats and arm exercises, the kids get in on the fun as the moms sing them nursery rhymes.

“She giggles all the time when we’re singing. We tickle their toes when we do something. We come back up and tickle them and she loves it,” said LaPlante.

It’s the only class of its kind north of the Twin Cities and a chance to keep mom in shape while promoting a healthy lifestyle for baby.

“There has been a few moms, more than one, that has told me they go home and their kiddo grabs the bands or grabs the little stroller and says, ‘I work out like mommy,” said Filzen.

That’s what it’s all about for LaPlante, who one day hopes to add another member to the class.

“Oh yeah. I want more. For sure. So I just have to get a bigger stroller,” laughed LaPlante.

Stroller Strides also offers play dates after class and a chance for moms to go out together.
