Animal Allies Welcomes Unwanted Fish

Organizations Encourage People to Not Release Fish in the Wild

Pet owners are welcomed to bring their unwanted fish or reptiles to animal Allies in Duluth on Saturday. But it’s not just so your pet can find a permanent home.

The event is also to encourage people to avoid releasing pet fish in to the environment. Releasing pets into Minnesota waters can be harmful to the environment and native species, and can wreak havoc on local ecosystems.

“Once they’re released they can cause problems on multiple levels,” said Doug Jensen, the Aquatic Invasive Species Program Coordinator, “They can out compete our native fish and wildlife for food, they can out compete for habitat, some of them even hybridize with some of our native species and some of them are more aggressive than our native species.”

The Event will be going on from 10 am to 4 pm.
