Bemidji Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide
Christopher Smith's charges arose form a vehicle crash on Hwy 65 back in March 2016
Itasca County Attorney John J. Muhar reports on Monday, September 26, 2016, Christopher Glenn Smith, 30, of Bemidji, Minnesota, was sentenced on one count of felony Criminal Vehicular Homicide.
The charge arose from a one vehicle crash on Highway 65 near Goodland in Itasca County on March 17, 2016.
The vehicle driven by Smith drifted off the highway and into the ditch where it rolled multiple times. Mark Alan Wirtjes was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The court sentenced Smith to 57 months in prison but stayed execution of sentence for ten years and placed Smith on ten years supervised probation.
Terms of Smith’s probation include the following conditions: serve 12 months jail; $1,085 fine; DNA sample; chemical dependency evaluation and follow recommendations; no use of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances; be subject to random testing; and, not to drive without a valid license of insurance.
