Belknap Construction Project is Beginning in Superior

Some Roads Will Be Closed

SUPERIOR, Wis.- Construction to improve Belknap Street in Superior is beginning as soon as the weather is warm enough.

People involved with the project say the current street is reaching the end of its useful life, and costing too much to maintain. The two year project on Belknap Street will replace around 1.4 miles of concrete roadway, upgrade the storm sewer system, and improve roadway safety.  For the first couple of weeks of construction the road will have single lane closures around the project.

“It’s going to be inconvenient with the lane restriction and moving traffic around. Trucks will for the most part be moved off the roadway, but the road will be open, it may take a little more effort but we will prove access to businesses both pedestrian and car traffic,” said Brendan Dirkes, the Construction Project Manager for the Belknap Street Project for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The project is scheduled to be completed in fall of 2018, and will cost around 23 million dollars.
