Man Drowns While Rescuing Dog in Chequamegon Bay
ASHLAND, Wis. – Around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a male, Ashland resident, Ronald Werchowski, 55, who was overdue from walking his dog near Krehr Park in Ashland.
The caller reported finding personal belongings of Werchowski at the park, as well as several holes in the ice on Lake Superior.
Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputies, Ashland Police, and the Ashland Fire Department responded to the scene. Search operations were conducted and a deceased male was recovered from the water, matching the description of Werchowski, around 8:30 p.m. that evening.
Drowning appeared to be the cause of death. The Ashland Fire Department told FOX 21 that Werchowski was attempting to save his dog, after the animal fell through the ice.
No foul play is suspected, and the investigation is on-going at this time.
