Ashland Bus Crash Victim Identified
The incident happened on STH 112
ASHLAND, Wis. – Around 7:45 a.m. Friday, May 19, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a car that had rear-ended a school bus on State Highway 112 approximately two miles south of Ashland.
Ashland County Deputies and other agencies arrived on scene to find the driver of the car not breathing.
After preliminary investigations, a Lakeshore bus was determined to be carrying 18 students traveling northbound on STH 112 and began slowing to make a left-hand turn when it was struck from behind by a car driven by a 16-year-old Ashland High School student, who was later identified as David Hamann of Mason, Wisconsin.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner.
Two students on the bus were transported to Memorial Medical Center and the remaining were taken by bus to the hospital for evaluation.
Authorities have indicated that Hamann was on his way to Ashland High School when his 2007 Kia struck the rear of the Lake Shore Bus. Preliminary investigations show that excessive speed was a possible contributing factor to the accident.
This crash remains under investigation by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.
Funeral arrangements have been made by Hamann’s family. Services will be held at noon on Tuesday, May 23 at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday.
