Authorities Investigate Suspicious Fire in Duluth

DULUTH - The Duluth Fire Department responded to a fire in an apartment building at 823 E 1st St at 5:54 A.M. Friday morning. The building had been evacuated and the fire in a first floor apartment had been mostly extinguished by residents prior to the fire department arrival.
The building was filled with smoke, which required fire crews to remain on the scene for one hour.
Residents in the fire apartment were awake and alert when the fire started, and were able to act quickly to prevent the fire from spreading.
At least four residents of the building were seen at a local emergency room for smoke inhalation.
Their condition is unknown.
Sub zero temperatures caused residents to seek shelter, many before the fire department arrived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Duluth Fire and Police fire investigators.
Preliminary findings are that the cause is suspicious.
