ELY - Evacuations plans stemming from a fire in Ely have been canceled.A forest fire grew to more than 40 acres Thursday night, prompting evacuations of about 250 people in the city.
Early reports said sparks from a tree that blew down a power line started the blaze off the city's east side.
Smoke started to appear around 2:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service called the weather "aggressive" for the fire near County Road 1.
The area has been dry with 20 to 30 mile per hour winds blowing out of the south.
It is expected to continue through the night Thursday, pushing the fire eastward.
Nine fire departments have started fighting the flames as well as four larger aircrafts dropping water.
Several buildings have been destroyed.
A temporary shelter was set up at the Ely Community Center.
