SUPERIOR - Leaders from Calumet in Superior have picked out a potential spot for a crude oil loading dock.
Records from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources show company officials applied for permits at 301 North 5th St. near Connor's Point in Superior.
The goal would be to ship crude oil from that spot across the Great Lakes.
Company officials said the idea came after oil production continued to boom in North Dakota.
Calumet now needs to find a business to partner with.
If they find one, the new dock could be up and running as early as 2015.
"We could see some additional development in terms of rebuilding the dock and those sorts of things, providing a few jobs so it's kind of exciting," Calumet Superior's plant manager Dave Podratz said. "So we're going to look for a customer, look for somebody to partner with and if it makes sense and we can come to an agreement, then this thing has a chance at getting built."
Meanwhile, environmental groups have expressed concern over the shipping of crude oil on the Great Lakes.
