CARLTON CO. - Carlton County is looking for help keeping up one of its cemeteries. Representative Mike Sundin (DFL-Esko), is sponsoring a bill to repair the Sawyer Cemetery which has a couple of generations of veterans buried there.
For 10 years ending in 2009, Carlton County had state authority to levy $1,000 in and for the unorganized area of Sawyer for cemetery purposes.
Sundin is hoping to get that bill re–instated permanently and says it would also eliminate a $1,000 cap but would require local approval.
The bill was approved and referred to the House Property and Local Tax Division.
A companion bill is being sponsored in the Minnesota Senate by Senator Tony Lourey (DFL-Kerrick), and is awaiting action by the Senate Taxes Committee.
