Carlton Co. Sheriff's Dept. Rescues Dog on Thin Ice

BARNUM - A caller reported that her three year old, approximately 100 pound German Shepherd/Golden Retreiver mix dog broke through the ice on Little Hanging Horn Lake in Barnum, MN. Volunteers from the Barnum Fire Department with the assistance of the Carlton County Sheriff's Office responded to the call.
Upon arrival responders met with the dog's owner who indicated that the dog had broken through the ice more than 150' from shore.
A 12' boat was comendeered from the shore and resuce ropes were secured to the boat.
A responder, wearing water & ice safety gear, rode in the watercraft that was teathered to shore retreived the dog.
Once the dog was successfully brought into the boat the boat was towed to the shore.
The dog was turned over to it's owner and appeared to be in good condition.
The Carlton County Sheriff's Office would like to take this opportunity to remind people that no amount of ice is safe and can be unpredictiblly thin.
Please use caution and common sense before venturing onto any frozen waters.
