Bill Kunze, who guided Duluth East to its first trip to the State Tournament in Girls Basketball since 2003, resigned Tuesday.
Kunze coached the Greyhound girls for six seasons and was named Section 7AAA Coach of the Year three times (2007, 2011, 2012). Before that he was the head coach of the Cloquet boys, and an assistant coach for the East boys. His overall record as a head coach was 388-322. Next year Kunze will serve as an assistant coach for the Greyhound volleyball team. He was head volleyball coach at Balaton High School for 20 years.
In a statement released by East, Kunze said "Coaching has been a very rewarding to me, watching players achieve to their potential in their sport and more importantly, seeing them develop into great individuals, is what I will look back on with the most appreciation. Coaching at East has been very special since most of the players I have coached I had in classroom at Woodland Middle school. Seeing them develop into super individuals has been very rewarding. I have appreciated the support from administration, parents, and fellow coaches over the years at Duluth East, East is a great place to coach."
Kunze is the second basketball coach to leave the Greyhounds in more than a week. Boys coach Chuck Tolo's contract wasn't renewed by the Duluth School Board amid allegations of MSHSL rule violations.
