DULUTH - The school board approved 2013's maximum levy at 11.9 percent Monday.
The number would fill in more than $3 million to the budget and would cost about $45 extra a year in property taxes for a $150,000 dollar home.
Some councilors agreed the number was high, but said it could be pushed down.
"We're three months away from that point where we have to have a final and this allows us time to see if we have sales of buildings or properties; it allows the public to hear about this," School Board Chair Ann Wasson said.
There will be future community discussions about the proposed levy.
The vote on a final number is set for December.
