Friends and colleagues Tuesday remembered the life of a long-time former Duluth City Councilor Jim Shearer.
Shearer served on the council from 1980 to 1992.
His former colleagues said he always brought clarity, leadership and patience to the council.
"He was always there for people to help them make better decisions because they were informed decisions and because they thought about all the ramifications of the things they did," said Greg Fox, a friend of Shearer.
Friends said he was also known for being a strong advocate for the handicapped.
Shearer died at his home last week from complications of childhood polio.
He was 66 years old.
