DULUTH-More than $30,000 is the average amount owed by UMD students after graduation.
On Friday, students set awareness of the debt ablaze by lighting more than 30,000 matches representing the burden left after completing every credit.
Students say the government should offer more support.
"What they could do right now is keep the subsidized loan interest rates at 3.4 percent. They're talking about raising that right now. They're also talking about cutting our Pell grants. Not to mention tuition has been growing every year since UMD started,” Former MPIRG Co-Chair Michael Duvall said.
UMD's average student debt is higher than any other public university in the state.
