LITTLE FALLS - When police arrived at a home in Little Falls on Friday, a man told the deputies that he shot and killed two people breaking into his home the day before.
Morrison County Sheriffs then found two bodies in the basement of 64-year-old Byron Smith’s home.
School officials say the victims were cousins, 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nicholas Brady.
Smith was arrested and is currently housed in the Morrison County Jail for second degree murder.
Smith told police that Kifer and Brady tried breaking into his home on Thanksgiving Day around noon.
He will have his initial court appearance on Monday, November 26 at 1:00 p.m. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says a preliminary investigation led authorities to arrest Smith for second-degree murder.
Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel says people have every right to defend themselves and their homes, but circumstances suggest Smith went beyond that point.
