BLACK RIVER FALLS-After a month of public meetings the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports there's strong support to expand the state's elk herd.
Between 90-98% of people taking surveys expressed excitement in bringing in 275 elk from Kentucky to expand the state's genetic pool.
Currently, about 170 elk live around Ashland and Sawyer counties.
Black river falls would receive the second herd, DNR officials said.
Bow and gun hunting seasons could open once elk numbers reach 200.
