DULUTH - A man who burglarized a home, confronted a person inside, ran from police and jumped into Lake Superior Friday now has 11 counts against him.
The arrest led to charges in two different burglaries and more could be on the way.
When
36–year–old Thomas Baker left the home on the 2700 block of Branch
Street Friday with more than $1 thousand of stolen items, he didn't get
away without a fight.
"That's very unusual," Sgt. Chad Nagorski of the Duluth Police
Department said. "Very rarely do we have burglaries where the burglar
and the homeowner come in contact with each other."
According to police, a 63–year–old woman living at the home caught Baker inside and asked him to drop their stuff.
As her 17–month–old grandson stood crying, Baker pushed the women
away and fled the house with precious items and electronics; some of
them in a recycling bin he carried behind him.
His following last-ditch effort at jumping into Lake Superior has neighbors in disbelief.
"I thought that was terrible," Kathy Hailey who lives on Branch
St. said. "I came here in '57 and we never had problems like that
before."
After Baker came out of the lake and was arrested, it led police to more information about a previously unsolved case.
"It's nice to let people know we have at least one person who is out victimizing that neighborhood," Sgt. Nagorski said.
Police said Baker admitted to an earlier March burglary at a home in the Chester Park neighborhood.
Charges for that case are now filed and more may be on the way.
"There could be others," Sgt. Nagorski said. "We're still
following up with leads we have and trying to put pieces of the puzzle
together."
Police are thanking the public for helping to lead them in the
right direction and are asking more people to keep notice of anything
odd happening around them.
"One of the big things is to stay alert," Sgt. Nagorski said.
"Make sure if you see anything odd going around your neighborhood to
contact 911."
A backpack with stolen items from Friday's burglary is still missing and could be near or in the lake.
Anyone that finds it is asked to call Duluth Police.
