Tuesday night, the Virginia City Council approved a merger between its biggest hospital and Essential Health St. Mary's Medical Center.
The council voted 5 to 2 in favor after a public approval vote of 93% for a merger.
The Virginia Regional Medical Center has been city owned and severely struggling financially for several years.
V.R.M.C. officials have said this final merger agreement would help the hospital turn around to provide primary care first with special care on a regular basis.
