Epilepsy affects nearly three million Americans. The condition happens when a surge of electric activity affects part of the brain. Now, doctors in New York have successfully completed a two–part brain surgery to stop the seizures. First electrodes are placed on the brain. Then, doctors monitor where any future seizures occur and remove that part of the brain tissue. Long–term research shows this two part surgery does significantly lower future seizures from happening.
A later start at school might be better for your teen. That's according to a new health study. A Rhode Island school moved their start time back by 30 minutes for the purpose of this study. The students overwhelmingly reported being happier, more motivated and sleeping better. They also noted a decrease in daytime sleepiness, fatigue and depression.
The CDC says most adults are getting the recommended breast and colorectal cancer screenings. Colorectal screenings have increased from 52 percent in 2002 to 63 percent in 2008. Eighty one percent of women between the ages of 50 and 74 received recommended mammography screenings. However, the CDC Director says more does still need to be done to get people screened for colorectal cancer. That particular cancer kills more American non–smokers than any other cancer.
