The first stage of President Barack Obama's federal health care plan are kicking in. New numbers released by the government today show it's expected to provide coverage to about one million uninsured Americans by next year. More than 100 million people are getting new benefits that improve their existing coverage. One of the first intiatives is a plan to offer insurance to the uninsured who have previous health problmes.
About a quarter of the swine flu vaccine produced for the US public has expired. That means a whopping 40 million doses worth about $260 million dollars are being written off as trash. The outdated vaccine, some of which expired last week, will be burned. That's not even all of it. About 30 million more doses will expire later and may go unused, according to one government estimate. If all that vaccine expires, more than 43 percent of the supply for the US public will have gone to waste.
Too much TV or too many video games may limit attention span. That's according to new research out of Iowa State University. Researchers followed 1,300 kids in grade school for more than a year. On average, they all spent about four and a half hours a day in front of screens. Teachers reported that the younger kids both had trouble paying attention and were likely to distract other kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics says two hours a day should be should be the limit for children age two and older.
