Swimmers Illness; July 4th Underage Drinking; Nurse Negotiations

Fri, 07/09/2010 - 5:19pm

Today's heat most likely has you wanting to dive into a pool or lake. But, before you do, the Minnesota Health Department has a few reminders. Hundreds of people get sick every year from "swimmer illnesses". It can range from just diarrhea to being hospitalized. Easy tips to avoid getting sick include not swallowing the water, taking a shower after swimming with soap and making sure your children take bathroom breaks. In the past 9 years, 35 disease outbreaks have been reported at Minnesota swimming pools and beaches.

It appears many underage drinkers are boozing it up during the 4th of July holiday weekend. It's leading to double the number of hospital emergency room visits this upcoming holiday. The federal government looked at data from 2008 on emergency room visits by underage drinkers. On an average July day, there were 502 visits versus 930 on July 4th.

Twin Cities nurses now have a date set to vote on a new contract offer. On Tuesday, 12 thousand nurses will decide if they approve the deal with 14 Twin Cities hospitals. The nurses union says 51 percent of its members must say yes for the vote to pass. If the deal doesn't get enough votes tuesday, negotiations will resume.
