DOUGLAS CO. - Amnicon Falls State Park, located in Douglas County just outside of Superior, has won the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources "State Park Treasures" contest.
The contest, which began on March 19, pegged sixteen of Wisconsin's lesser-known and used state parks properties against each other in a bracket-style Facebook voting contest on the WI DNR's Facebook page.
Parks with the most votes by the end of each round of voting moved on in the competition until only one park — Amnicon Falls — remained.
"To be able to have Amnicon Falls win the contest is such an awesome opportunity to show the rest of the state what a gem we have up here," said Brittany Berrens, the Director of Marketing and Social Media at the Superior-Douglas County Visitor Bureau. "Hopefully the buzz that was created around this contest on Facebook will inspire a few folks to make a trip up to northwestern Wisconsin to check out Amnicon Falls State Park, as well as Pattison State Park and all the other outdoor recreation opportunities we have in the area."
Amnicon Falls wasn't the only winner in the contest.
Everyone who voted was entered into a random drawing for a state parks prize package.
One lucky winner will take home a $50 Wisconsin state park campsite gift certificate, donated by Active Network, Inc., a 2014 resident annual state park sticker, a 2014 annual trail pass, and a campfire cookbook, all donated by the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks.
