DULUTH – Friends, family and community members celebrated the 50th year of ownership at Deluxe Coney Island Thursday.
The restaurant's owner, Peter Regas, was born in Greece and eventually settled down in Duluth in the early 1960s.
At that time, he started working with his brother at his downtown Deluxe Coney Island restaurant.
Regas made the move to the Miller Hill Mall in the 1980s when the food court expansion was added.
"I thank them, been coming for so many years to support me. I still love them and I will forever," Regas said about his customers.
Thursday's celebrations included a recognition ceremony and the inaugural Coney Eating Contest.
The winner, Sherman Frederick, ate 10-and-a-half-Coney-dogs.
The restaurant will be giving away samples and prizes for every 50th customer July 24-30.
