ELY - A tower that's caused a lot of controversy in northern Minnesota has now been built. AT&T has put up a 450 foot cell phone tower near the Boundary Waters that's expected to be up and running later this year.
The construction of the tower was fought by the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, which argued it could seriously compromise the state's ability to protect its scenic areas, but in August the Supreme Court ruled against them.
The company tells fox 21 news the project will significantly increase the availability and reliability of wireless service in the Boundary Waters – enabling for wireless calls made to report accidents or to summon medical help.
They also say the tower will improve the health and safety of area residents, tourists and businesses.
