ST. PAUL, Minn. AP - Gov. Mark Dayton along with House Speaker Paul Thissen and Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk are holding a rare Sunday news conference at the Capitol, indicating a possible deal on the state budget.
The Capitol's three top Democrats met for several hours Saturday to negotiate the final mix of taxes and spending in the state's 2014-15 budget.
On the table were a handful of possible tax increases including income tax hikes on higher earners, and sales tax hikes on clothes, cigarettes and alcohol.
Democrats in charge at the Capitol want the additional tax revenue to boost state spending on schools, higher education and property tax relief.
Republicans say the plans lean too hard on taxpayers.
Monday marks one week until the Legislature must adjourn its regular session.
