HIBBING – Duluth, Superior and Virginia are all taking action to stop synthetic drugs from spreading in their communities. Now Hibbing has joined in the fight by passing their own ordinance.
In a special meeting city councilors passed an ordinance that requires businesses to get a permit or license from the city in order to sale synthetics.
Under the ordinance shops selling the fake drugs cannot be open between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., synthetics cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 21 and synthetics shops cannot be within 500 feet of parks, schools or day cares.
"We are just trying to stay ahead of it as best as we can,” Hibbing City Administrator Tom Dicklich said. “We'll use whatever means necessary that we can to protect the community."
Hibbing is also in the process of working on another ordinance that is more tailored to the city.
It will focus on keeping up with the ever changing ingredients of synthetics.
