DULUTH - Saturday marked the annual Free Comic Day across the Northland and the Nation.
Over 2-thousand stores nation wide participated in the comic day, which comes around every first Saturday of the month of May.
The event is to encourage kids to read more, but it helps the local businesses as well.
"It actually has done a lot to save a lot of comic shops," said Ryan Fleming from Rougue Robot Comics in Duluth. "A time has gone on, you know, fewer and fewer people are reading printed media. So it's kind of fun to go out and get something new."
Studies show that the average comic book introduces children to nearly twice as many new words than the average childrens book.
