SUPERIOR - A student at the University of Wisconsin - Superior presented his findings Friday, on the economic and environmental impact of the proposed Gogebic Taconite mine in Northern Wisconsin. This summer, Aleksei Bogdanov collected a total of 893 self-reported surveys.
In the random sample, a total of 200 households were contacted over the phone, and he talked to FOX 21 about his findings.
“Is perceived more negatively, so most responders totally oppose it, at the same time they admit that th economic impact of the mine will be more positive rather than negative,” Bogdanov said. “Also, residents of Ashland and Iron counties are concerned with water pollution, air pollution, and the impact of the mine on tourism.”
The survey was a product of an undergraduate research project that was made possible by the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.
