MADELINE ISLAND - Ashland County Authorities are reporting that two snowmobilers have been found dead after going through the ice near Madeline Island. On February 20, 2013 at 0939 the Ashland County Sheriff's 911 communication center received a phone call reporting two snowmobilers were missing.
They were last seen on Wednesday at 9:30 pm leaving Bayfield heading to Madeline Island.
The caller stated they never arrived at their destination.
The LaPointe Fire Department, LaPointe Police Department and the Madeline Island wind sled were notified to conduct a search.
At 0956 the LaPointe Fire and EMS reported they found a snowmobile partially
submerged and one male victim in the water just south of Madeline Island near the South Channel.
The victim was nonresponsive and transported to Bayfield were he was pronounced dead.
The Bayfield Search & Rescue dive team located the second victim at 12:56pm Thursday.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural resources is the lead agency in the investigation.
They are being assisted by the LaPointe Police Department, LaPointe Fire and EMS and Ashland County Sheriff's Office.
Both men were in their 30's and lived on Madeline Island.
The names of the victims are not being released until the next of kin are notified.
The incident remains under investigation.
