DULUTH - Northland veterans gathered to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11.
They surrounded the State of Liberty near the western end of the Duluth Auditorium.
John Petrich, a Duluth Police chaplin, remembers working at ground zero with teams recovering bodies after the attacks.
"If you could imagine 17 acres of disaster, a crime scene with rubble and dirt and rock. The fires were still burning underground the smoke was incredibly bad," he said.
All U.S. flags were flown at half-staff in honor of the anniversary.
