MADISON (WPR) Management of the Midwest's grey wolf population will eventually go back to Wisconsin and other states, if the new Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has his way.
After months of legal back and forth, Endangered Species Act protections once again apply to the grey wolf in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. That means landowners and others can not kill problem wolves. The Fish and Wildlife Service has promised a federal judge that the agency will let people comment on any future proposed rule to remove protections for wolves in the western Great Lakes region. While in Madison last week, at the Society of Environmental Journalists conference, Fish and Wildlife Director Sam Hamilton said the wolf discussions are not over
There are believed to be more than 600 grey wolves just in Wisconsin, well above state goals for a stable wolf population. The Department of Natural Resources says about a dozen of the animals were killed illegally last year.
