Itasca County fire displaces twenty

GRAND RAPIDS - A townhome building fire displaced about twenty people in Itasca County Sunday.

It happened at the old Sugar Hill Ski Lodge area south of Grand Rapids around 4:30 p.m.  Grand Rapids Fire Chief Steve Flaherty said the fire began in the third floor of a townhome in a building with 16 units.

Flaherty said the fire was contained to the townhome where it started, but other units suffered heat, smoke, and water daamge.  He estimated damage at $200,000.

One pet was killed, but no people were injured.

The state fire marshal will help investigate the cause.

Red Cross volunteers are helping two of the displaced families.  The others were able to find shelter with friends and family.
