DULUTH, Minn. -

Community members were invited to hop on board the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Large Lakes Observatory Science on Deck.

It’s a free event on the Blue Heron Research Vessel, where the public had the chance to tour the ship and learn about the great lakes.

The event included a child friendly and visual demonstration on coring, to spark kids’ interest in science and the lakes.

"We know we can study it but we also have to protect it right and so there’s so much, people want to use the lake, people want to enjoy the lake but it also has to be protected, " said Amy Myrbo of the University of Minnesota.

The event will be held again on September 23rd .
