GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -

It's bear hunting season in Minnesota starting September 1st.

There are 3,850 permits available this year and this is up from the amount that they sold in 2008.

The bear hunting season will start on September 1st and go through October 16th.

Dan Stark, a Specialist at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, said "There was about a thirty percent decline in the population so we wanted to reverse that and see an increase."

Hunters must be 10 years of age or older.

Residents ages 18 and over must pay a $45 permit fee, youth 10-12 must obtain a license, but pay no fee. Youth ages 13-17 will pay a $16 permit fee.
