SUPERIOR, Wis. -

The Superior Police Department is investigating what they believe to be a random robbery and brutal beating of a woman.

On Sunday, October 16, 2016 around 2:15 a.m., police responded to a call of a robbery in the alley behind some bars 1224 Tower Avenue.

On arrival, officers located a 40-year-old female bleeding heavily from the head.

Witnesses reported a male and female walking in the alley had been approached by a light-colored sedan.

The vehicle stopped alongside the couple and four black males in their early 20s exited the vehicle, according to authorities.

A witness reported one of the suspects pointed a pistol at the male pedestrian.

The male pedestrian fled on foot to call 911, and the female was then attacked and "mugged."

She was taken to Essentia in Duluth for treatment. Her condition was unknown Monday.

In addition to the injuries to the head, the female victim's Michael Kors black leather cross body purse was taken.

If you know anything, call 911.
