BAYFIELD - The Madeline Island Ferry Line has stopped running for the season because of ice.
The ferries ended operations last Tuesday, according to the ferry line's Web site. Now wind sleds are carrying passengers between Bayfield and LaPointe.
The wind sleds can travel across ice and open water, and they make several scheduled trips each day. They'll operate until the ice is strong enough to open the annual ice road between the island and the mainland.
For updates on the wind sleds and the ice road, call 715–747–5400 any time for a recorded message.
