Madeline Island ice road closes after just one week

BAYFIELD - A little more than a week after it opened, the Madeline Island ice road is closing for the season.

Deteriorating conditions near the Bayfield shore have been exacerbated by heavy traffic from the Bayfield Winter Festival this weekend.

Officials said they'll be changing the signs to read "road closed" by Sunday.

The ice road links Madeline Island with Bayfield in the winter; the crossing is served by a ferry for most of the rest of the year. Windsleds also provide transportation during freeze-up and break-up.
