Michigan House OKs exempting underage drinkers calling 911
LANSING, Mich. (AP) Minors wouldn't be prosecuted for underage drinking if they or their friends call 911 for medical assistance under legislation approved by the Michigan House.
The bill passed 98-7 Wednesday and now goes to the Senate. The measure has the support of Michigan law enforcement and college student groups.
Supporters say the measure will help prevent instances where underage drinkers die from ingesting alcohol because they or their friends are too afraid to call police or emergency personnel.
Democratic Rep. Mark Meadows of East Lansing says his bill won't encourage drinking.
Under current state law, minors caught drinking alcohol face up to a $100 fine for their first offense.
