Milwaukee’s new Archbishop wants nationwide school vouchers
MILWAUKEE (WPR) Milwaukee's new Catholic Archbishop says he'd like to see school vouchers be expanded nationwide.
Former La Crosse Bishop Jerome Listecki took over Monday (1/4) as Archbishop of the Milwaukee Archdiocese. He later told news reporters that a top priority of his will be expanding Catholic schools. He says the taxpayer-funded school voucher system now limited to low income parents in the city of Milwaukee should go nationwide.
Listecki says the newest U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is a graduate of a Catholic high school. The number of students in the Milwaukee voucher system is nearing its cap, and this year's governor's race in Wisconsin is expected to include talk of raising the cap, or expanding vouchers outside of Milwaukee.
