Pavement problems lead to lower speed limit on stretch of Hwy. 53

Wed, 03/03/2010 - 4:31pm

SOUTH RANGE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Transporation has temporarily lowered the speed limit on a portion of U.S. Highway 53 in Douglas County due to a pavement problem.

The speed limit has been lowered from 65 to 55 miles per hour between U.S. Highway 2 and Kent Road, a stretch of about six miles.  Warning signs have been put up in the area to warn drivers of the pavement issues.

WisDOT said the pavement has experienced severe tenting, or heaving of the pavement at cracks, causing an uneven ride.

WisDOT plans to hire a contractor to repair the road in August.
