SUPERIOR - Things are a little slow on the first weekend of Wisconsin's gun-deer hunt.
John Overshiner got his buck Sunday, after he spent all of Saturday waiting and seeing nothing. "Lots of squirrels, lots of blue jays. You always think the squirrel's a deer because it's crunching all the leaves," he said.
That's not unusual, according to one worker at the Holiday Station Store in Superior's Itasca neighborhood, which registers deer. "Last year it was, they saw twenty and shot one. This year, they seen one six hours after sitting, and that's the one they shot," said Tracy Livingston.
Livingston said they registered 61 bucks and 38 does on opening day, a little less than last year. The Wisconsin DNR has posted other reports from opening day at http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/news/BreakingNews_Lookup.asp?id=1503.
Wisconsin hunters have through Nov. 29 to get their deer.
