Wisconsin lawmakers discuss deadly fish virus in Lake Superior
SUPERIOR - Two Northwestern Wisconsin lawmakers want careful monitoring now that a deadly fish virus has been confirmed in Lake Superior.
Rep. Nick Milroy (D-Superior) and Sen. Bob Jauch (D-Poplar) say there's not much that can be done to stop viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS, now that it's in Lake Superior.
But Milroy, who is also a fisheries biologist, says the next step is to stop other invasive species from entering the lake.
"We really need to focus on new species from coming in," he said Friday. "I think that's the most effective way to set regulations and policies to make sure we don't have further economic damage to our region and to our aquatic environments."
The two are pushing for powers to monitor bilge water on recreational boats by police officers, not just conservation officers.
