Wisconsin's gun-deer hunt begins Saturday

SUPERIOR  - They're hunting in Minnesota.  They're hunting in Michigan.  Saturday, it's Wisconsin's turn.  The state's deer hunt kicks off at sunup, re–igniting an old tradition for some... a new one for others... and the state's economy.

"Very long, busy days," say Krista Huber of Northwest Outlet in Superior.  "By one o'clock, I already had four thousand in license sales. "

Every year it's the same thing at 'Northwest Outlet' the day before the Wisconsin gun deer season.

Says Krista, "People come in at the last moment just trying to get out to the woods.  They need their license.  They need everything."

While they are selling a ton of licenses, they have an unusual problem with ammunition.  Due to a shortage, there is a limited supply of a number of popular calibers.

"A lot of the companies turned their focus to producing hand–gun ammunition and less on some of the hunting rounds," says Ted Sellers with Northwest Outlet.

That limited supply, however, isn't dampening the spirits of the orange blaze brigade, young or old.

"This is my first year with a rifle," says 12 year old, Brian Walman of Superior.

"Been coming here for 25 years," says Scott Watson of White Bear Lake, MN.

Neither is the weather apparently.  Forecast to be in the low 40's for the weekend.

"I can wear tennis shoes out there now," says Nate Smith of Superior.

"I'm glad it's warm," says Brian.

"As long as it's not raining, I'll take the snowm," says Scott.

Making for pleasant conditions on a weekend to which they're all looking forward.

"It's the food, the barbeque and hanging out having a few beers," says Nate.

"I'm hoping I get a deer," says Brian.

"It's our Thanksgiving tradition, come up here and spend nine days with people you only see once or twice a year," says Scott.
