LUTSEN - For golfers, any trip to Lake Superior's North Shore should include a stop at Superior National in Lutsen.

"Its a fantastic venue, 27 holes," says Superior National Director of Golf, Greg Leland.  "No houses on the golf course, view of the Sawtooth Mountains, Poplar River.  Its a wonderful place to be."

Opened in 1992 and expanded in 1999, Superior National has drawn national attention.  In 2009, Golf Digest Magazine named Superior National its Number One Municipal Course in all of Minnesota.

Forbort has NHL in his sights

DULUTH - For three years, Derek Forbort played hockey for Duluth East.  But this year, Forbort skipped his senior season at East to play for the U.S. National Team Development Program, a decision he has no regrets about.

"Definitely not," he says.  "It was one of the best years of my life.

"It was a blast.  I played a lot of games, my teammates were great.  It just was a lot of fun traveling all over the world playing hockey, I loved it." » read more

DULUTH - Nikki logergren is playing her fourth season of high school softball.  Her teammates see her as a role model, even the older ones.  You see, logergren is only a sophomore.

"People have said 'I look up to you, even though you're younger than me,'" said Logergren.  "I just work as hard as I possibly can, so I hope people look at me as that type of person."

Logergren started playing varsity for Denfeld in seventh grade, and now she feels like a leader.

SUPERIOR - A self–described tomboy as a child, University of Wisconsin–Superior softball player Kalli Kucharyski says that came from spending so much time with her dad, who taught her the game she loves.

"One day we just decided to play catch," she says.  "Then he had me pick up a bat one day and asked me which way felt most comfortable to swing."

Kalli was quickly hooked and spent almost all of her free time playing softball.

SUPERIOR - Unlike most athletes that excel in their chosen sport, Shane holmes didn't get his start on the track until he was about 12 years old, when his mother convinced him to start running.

"We did this thing called wednesday night at the races," he said.  "Every wednesday in the summer we'd go out and run a mile, and just compete against whoever showed up."

Now a junior in high school, Shane is one of the top runners in Wisconsin.  But no matter how good he is, he still gets nervous before a race.

MINNEAPOLIS - Only 32 teams qualify for the Boys State Basketball Tournament.  For the first time ever, this year, one of those teams was Mesabi East.

Randolph makes Duluth East hockey a family affair

DULUTH - Mike Randolph has been the head hockey coach at Duluth Est for his son Jake's entire life.  In fact, Jake's birth coincided with East's berth in the 1994 State Tournament, which nearly forced dad into a difficult decision.

"People in the family, and people outside the family that were real close to the family were placing bets, I found out later, about whether I was going to go down to the state tournament, to the banquet, or whether I was going to stay home until he was born," said the elder Randolph.
