Northlanders Hold a Special Parade for Smelt

DULUTH - People rallied together on Sunday for the second annual "Run Smelt Run" parade.The parade coinsides withthe smelt fish season, when the water of Lake Superior warms and smelt start swiming towards to warm rivers to spawn. Although the parade is new, smelt traditions have a long past in the northland. "I guess it's like highliting an event that's already happening in nature," said parade organizer Anton Jumenez-Kloectkl. "People are sort of itching for a spring ritual of sort, and the smelt run is one of those things."Community members participating in the parade wore silver a smelt costumes. The parade started in Canal Park and went up the Lakewalk to the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe center for a smelt feed and dancing.
