Two Harbors New Starting Point for Beargrease

Lack of Snow Deciding Factor

After much consideration, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon board of directors is proud to announce the 2015 race will begin in Two Harbors, MN at the Highway 2 gravel pit because of the lack of snow.

Race director Alex Angelos says trail conditions have improved in the area to allow for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday, January 25th.

The board decided on the Highway 2 location to keep the race course length as close to the original 384 miles as possible.

This year’s course length will be 319 miles, which still allows mushers to use the 2015 marathon to qualify for the Iditarod.

The Highway 2 location also allows more space for mushers and their dogs, vehicles and spectators.

Race start activities will begin at 12 p.m. when fans will be given the chance to ‘meet the mushers’ and their dog teams, purchase official race merchandise, enjoy food and take in the exciting race atmosphere!

Then, the first mid distance teams will leave the starting chute at 2 p.m., followed by the marathon teams.

The board is also excited to announce snow conditions have improved allowing for the 2nd annual cub run to go on as planned.

Our junior mushers will race a team of 1 or 2 dogs around a 2 mile course at the Black Bear Casino and resort golf course starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 24th.

Registration is required, and costs $25 for each junior musher.
