Thursday evening kicked off a new event to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther king week in Duluth.

Community leaders and activists gathered at Duluth’s Depot for the first ever mayor’s reception.

MLK event planners say January 15 is Dr. King’s actual birthday, and they couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate his work and carry on his legacy.

“The reason it’s so important to celebrate every year is because we can always continue to do more to celebrate the life of [Dr.] King,” said organizer Rachel Loeffler-Kemp.

Monday morning at 10:45 activists will gather at the Washington Center, walk down Lake Avenue to the DECC to show support for human rights.
