So much for frozen pond hockey at Barker’s Island this weekend, because the weather is causing headaches.
Friday evening’s opening ceremonies turned into a soggy, slick, and sloppy mess.
The ice had thawed so much by mid-afternoon that the Superior Curling Club decided to play at the Superior Amateur Hockey Association’s complex.
“We brought down an extra Zamboni from SAHA so we had two of them down here. We brought down an extra sweeper from one of the local contracting companies and we’ve had them going ever since,” said Jason Rauner, Pond Hockey Tournament Organizer.
Rauner said there are 27-inches of ice on the island.
If conditions continue to worsen, Rauner said they will shave down the top layers of ice.
