The Lake Superior Conference Basketball championship is back in Superior.
The Spartans won the LSC title with a 79–62 victory Thursday in Hermantown.
The championship is the school’s 8th in the last 10 years and comes just one season after a disappointing seven win campaign.
Superior’s 2nd year head coach Jake Smith suffered through those growing pains a year ago now he and his Spartans get to reap the rewards.
“All the years I played in High School and College, I never won a conference championship,” said Smith. “It’s a good feeling for me, and these guys. Now they’re conference champs and we shared it together for the first time.”
“Playing the way we have this year, I think a lot of these guys deserve it,” said Senior Nate Sanders. “We work really hard in practice, always high intensity. As a team, we deserved it.”
“We’ve wanted this since we started playing basketball,” said senior Connor Gray. “Watching the older guys on our way up, this was always our goal. It’s basically the ultimate reward to win the conference championship.”
